As the Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) grant began, it was soon clear that the Pacific Mountain Alliance for Innovation, which runs WIRED, needed to create a sustainable training center where both new and incumbent workers could learn job-ready skills that lead directly to living-wage careers in a wide variety of occupations available in the five-county region. These jobs range from the most familiar, in forestry and marine harvesting, to the newest in leading-edge specialized manufacturing and green business opportunities, such as biomass and alternative energy.
In order to make this transformation of the regional workforce become a reality, the Regional Education and Training Center (RETC) began to take shape as a facility, centrally located at the Satsop Development Park, that could meet today’s training needs. Using a consultant, WIRED staff, successful national models, and WIRED partner input, the RETC is now close to completion. It is already hosting training in a wide variety of skills, ranging from green construction, to basic employment, to 6 Sigma management, to forestry management, to computerized manufacturing techniques, and a host of others.
The RETC also takes advantage of the Satsop site’s resources to partner with the Grays Harbor College Forestry Program, Career and Technical Education classes with a Try-A-Trade with Technology day for regional high school students, and a Skills USA competition. The RETC continues to acquire the space and resources it needs, including advanced classrooms and laboratories, specialty hands-on instruction stations, and even a web presence that will support online instruction and resource sharing. RETC is already at work, and in the weeks to come, the region will learn even more about how the RETC can help attract new industries, foster entrepreneurship, and train the workforce for the latest evolution of our economy.
What's Happening Now
The Regional Education and Training Center is pleased to announce the launch of its new website. Please take a few moments to visit our site. As with our education project, the new web site is a work in progress and we welcome feedback and comments. Not all of our programs are up on the site yet, but we wanted to get a web presence out in the world. Please send me an email or leave a comment on the site!
